Fall 2013: RYIT Learns Science!

RYIT Learns Science! program based on the Science Rocks activities provided by PBS ZOOMsci Our program consists of major components: Mix It Up, Design It, Live It Up, and Move It. These components address Chemistry, Engineering, Biology, and Forces & Energy, respectively.

Our Mix It Up! Segment will provide our kids with an introduction to chemistry basics. The Saltwater Tester experiment will teach our kids how to measure salt content as well as the basics of electricity. Our Plastic Milk experiment to teach our kids the 3 phases: solid, liquid, and gas. In the following week, we plan to perform a 2-part experiment during our Design It! Week to consider how water is filtered. During Live it Up! Week we will specifically focus on plant biology first with the experiment “Germinator”. For our Coloring Flowers experiment, we will investigate how a plant’s stomates allow water to evaporate. For our last week Move It! ,  we will perform the Electric Gelatin experiment. This experiment builds on the concept of electricity introduced to our students in the Saltwater Tester Experiment previously mentioned. Charge and static electricity are fun concepts that can be demonstrated using everyday materials. Our last activity Lemon Juice Rockets introduces our kids to acid-base reactions and produces results that are exciting to view.
