About us

We’re an afterschool program that provides year-round academic and emotional support to youth of our summer program (Roxbury Youth Initiative).  Our main focus is on homework and academic help and providing a safe, educational space for our students after school.  Additionally, we seek to build on our students’ strengths and community assets through our unique community based “curriculum,” hands on activities, and field trips!

Roxbury Youth Initiative Term-time (RYIT) is part of the Phillips Brooks House Association. The Phillips Brooks House Association is a student-run nonprofit that serves youth and adults in the Boston and Cambridge area. RYIT became a recognized PBHA program in 2010. There had previously been programming in the Roxbury area, but it became an archived PBHA program. Two previous directors of Roxbury Youth Initiative, the Summer Urban Program Camp, recognized the lack of continuity between summer and term and decided to start an after school program in Roxbury. They chose New Academy Homes because many of the campers from RYI also live in the public housing.

We aim to provide a safe, educational space for youth after the school day. We follow a model of positive youth development, seeking to build on youth strengths as well as target and reinforce community assets. Through hands on enrichment activities and field trips, RYIT allows youth participants to explore their neighborhood, gain academic skills and confidence, and learn from positive role models.

Roxbury Youth Initiative Term (RYIT) strives to provide continuous, year-round academic and emotional support to youth of our Summer Urban Program camp, Roxbury Youth Initiative. Our main focus is on homework help, academic help, and enriching curriculum. Our youth are ages 6-12 and come from the Academy Homes public housing in Roxbury, Massachusetts. We volunteer at the New Academy Homes Center
twice weekly for a period of two hours.
